[Image: Image removed. Iconic black and white photo of a white woman in a nurse’s uniform being forcibly kissed by a white man in a U.S. Navy sailor’s uniform during a street parade.]
Look at his hands, look at her balance. She’s not daintily placing her foot in the air, she is off-kilter. The placement of his legs and the force he is exerting on her is pulling her off of her feet. Look at his hand on her waist. He’s forcing her hips into that position. Look at her head in the crook of his elbow, he has entire control over the position of her head. Look at the way they kiss, look at his closed fist. This wasn’t a gentle advance with an opportunity for dissent (or consent), this was a woman ripped off of her feet and molested. This is rape culture.
Man, shut the fuck up.
[Image: A picture of a young black man looking disgusted.]you’re not allowed to do that with that pic
it’s historic and has nothing to do with fucking rape culture
It’s historic rape culture. Woman walking down the street is grabbed by a total stranger who forces unwanted sexual contact on her & then he gets lauded for it?! It’s rape culture 101!
Karnythia is right, people. Why y’all don’t listen when she is speaking truth is beyond me. Well, actually I know. It’s because right now, she’s speaking truth a lot of people do not want to hear.
Gotta love how you’re not “allowed” to do that with that pic because it’s historic. Or that somehow, rape culture’s history is irrelevant because it’s this brand new thing that some angry woman types invented or something. And by love, I mean want to tell people to go put a brick to their heads until they get better ideas.
See, this is how rape culture goes about doing what it does. Because it tries to erase it’s tracks, tries to pretend that it didn’t seep into our fucking brains JUST THIS WAY, that it hasn’t been there generation after generation. It doesn’t want us to think about our prior generations (especially amongst the most privileged of us) being rapists or assailants.
By showing us these big images and romanticizing them and making sure to tell us not to think too hard or criticize them, by trying to put a rosy glow around assault, around the idea of someone being assaulted, especially if that someone is a woman.
The message has been there all along, encoded in this picture. The message: “Hey, male people, especially WHITE male people, if you’re feeling in the mood, women all around you are available for your pleasure and permission is not needed from them, they exist to SERVE YOU.”
Because the context of consent has ALWAYS been lacking in this picture and the story told about it. What’s celebrated about this picture isn’t really any kind of joy, it’s that a U.S. Sailor was so fucking hyped up that he went and just grabbed whatever woman he wanted to and did whatever he wanted to and didn’t give a shit whether she even said “okay” or not.
The message has always been: “Aww, isn’t it romantic when men just do whatever they want to women, whenever they want? That’s so nice for him, getting to overrule her bodily autonomy and right to say “no” like that.”
Or: What Karnythia said.
why doesnt this have more notes?!
